Fall 2012 Community Worm Workshops

Fall is a great time to learn how to put red worms to work for you so in the spring you can reap the benefits of ‘gardener’s gold’! This fun and educational method of composting with worms, called vermicomposting, has been used in homes, classrooms, and offices across the country as a means of reducing the amount of food waste thrown out with the garbage or put down the drain. The process results in a rich source of plant nutrients coveted by gardeners.

During this family-friendly, hands-on workshop you will put together a worm bin while learning how to successfully maintain it. Workshop fee includes bin, red worms, bedding material, care supplies, worm bin care guide and post workshop support.

This fall two area worm workshops are being held as well as a Young Scientists Class for kid’s third grade and above. If your child has ever asked why a worm is slimy or if they’ve ever wondered if a worm can live after being cut in half they will find the answers to these questions and more at the Young Scientists Class. Participants will learn all about the wondrous worm and the important role worms play in the health of our planet. They’ll also spend time as a worm scientist using observational skills while getting face to face with a red worm to learn about its anatomy, body systems and senses.

The workshops are led by Iris CEO, environmental educator and worm enthusiast Sarah Archer. If you are interested in learning how to bring a workshop to your community please visit the ‘Contact Us’ tab on our website http://www.iriswastediversion.com/contact-us.
