Iris Helps Manistee County Recycle

Sarah and the Iris Waste Diversion Team have entered into a two year education service agreement with the Manistee County Board of Commissioners to focus on the county’s PA 69 recycling program.

It is the number one priority of The Manistee County Recycling Leadership Team to have 100% county-wide participation in the recycling program within the next three years. To do this Iris Waste Diversion Specialists will be working closely with Township government to discuss the benefits of a county-wide program to each community as well as developing and implementing ways to build residential awareness of the recycling program.

Iris is looking forward to providing Public and School Education Services to help sustain and grow Manistee’s current recycling program as well as Program Expansion and Program Administration needs as it grows.

As the program reaches the goal of 100% county-wide participation Iris will continue to work with the Recycling Leadership Team to sustain and continue education by offering recycling education support materials and resource lists for participation in local activities and national events such as America Recycles Day and Earth Day.

Iris Waste Diversion Specialists is delighted to have been selected by the Manistee County Board of Commissioners to provide these services and is looking forward to building relationships within the Manistee communities.

Closing the Loop on Latex Paint

Iris Waste Diversion Specialists is in the process of developing an exciting, much needed, paint recycling collection program. The program will provide a safe, easy, cost effective solution for managing unwanted latex paints.

The Ugly Duckling Latex Paint Recycling Program will serve as an example of ‘closing the loop’ by providing a collection program for a waste product, diverting it to a recycling facility for processing into a new usable product, that is returned to the marketplace for purchase.

The program is designed to provide a low cost alternative to sponsoring organizations, such as county and municipal governments and will encourage partnerships with local non-profit collection sites.

To learn how to bring the Ugly Duckling Latex Paint Recycling Program to your community, contact Lisa Lafferty-McGill at 734-340-4749 extension 4.

As you prepare to plant your prize winning garden put these ideas to use for a ‘greener’ garden.

Enjoy a weed free garden by using old newspapers for garden weed control. Wet the newspaper, place a thick layer in the garden and cover with bark or stones.

Use old stockings to tie up plants in the garden.

Use water from your rain barrel to water your garden.

Repurpose old mini-blinds as plant markers

Are your garden paths muddy after rainfall? Try this reuse idea to stabilize those footpaths. Put old window or door screens along the path for safer walking or barrowing.

Use empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls for seedling pots. Cut the roll in thirds; fill with potting soil and seedlings. When the seedlings are ready for planting plant the entire thing, the paper roll will decompose.

When freshening your pets’ water use the old water for your garden.

Just a few quick ways to be ‘green’ in the garden. Happy planting!
